New tattoo got started… The Haida Yggdrasil

I first thought of this in 2012 - In 2013 Colin Dale - my most trusted tattooist *) - made the first draft (on me).

The idea was to unite my Haida tattoos with the Nordic and Norse tradition. If you look into just a bit of Haida, Norse and Christian history you will find a shared legacy (If you cannot see it I most dearly urge you to broaden your horizon and range of inclusion…)

That said things had to mature…. Colin did some rethinking and reworking of the design over time past. The issue being that the Nordic Yggdrasil is a TREE and even though the Haida did a lot of tree carving they really didn't picture trees (or any plants for that matter) as such.

So we ended with an Yggdrasil composed of Haida style images of the creatures living in the Yggdrasil. Also it was quickly decided that my torso did not leave enough space and we would have to include more of me to make it work.

Compare the first draft with the work done so far and spot the difference....

Even if only the top half have been outlined you should be able to spot the (unnamed) eagle and Ratatosk - the squirrel who runs up and down the Yggdrasil to carry messages as mentioned in the Prose Edda:

"An eagle sits at the top of the ash, and it has knowledge of many things. Between its eyes sits the hawk called Vedrfolnir [...]. The squirrel called Ratatosk [...] runs up and down the ash. He tells slanderous gossip, provoking the eagle and Nidhogg….."
